TenthMile is the home of a twentythirty-something girl just trying to make her way in the world. She craves constant entertainment and usually finds it in the form of indie rock, classic literature, sci-fi and non-reality TV, and overused literary devices like speaking in third person and euphonic alliteration. Also, rocky road ice cream.
This website was created circa 1999 for the sole purpose of learning html, but addiction to seeing her words in print soon took over and before long the monster was unleashed. It’s now become an outlet for creativity that’s all too often stifled by a desk and the padded walls of an office.
An idealist at heart, she believes in the cultural and technological benefits of an open society, the separation of church and state, making education our top priority, and that pop icons should be enthusiastically mocked. When not at work you can usually find her scouring the web for fresh content, watching the world through the rose colored lens of a camera, or dancing jauntily to the tune of ‘Cecilia’. You might also find her pondering the unexplained mysteries of the Universe over a rousing game of miniature golf. You just never know.
Frequently Asked Questions…
Where are all your archives prior to August 2004?
They died and went to world wide web heaven. My best guess is that my old webhost went temporarily insane and killed them in a fit of rage. All I know for sure is that I woke up one morning and they were gone. It’s still a little hard to talk about. Memorial service to be held next Thursday.
Where do you live?
United States, East Coast, State of Euphoria, table for one.
Why do you watch so much TV?
Entertainment is soothing. You look a little tense, you should try it sometime.
What’s the song from that Toyota commercial that goes “laa laa laa, la la la-la la”?
It’s Kylie Mingoue, “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head”.
What makes you think you know so much about the music industry?
I don’t, but I would hope that twenty or so years as a classically trained musician, including three years of playing professionally and another two as an audio engineer would help me speak with at least some authority. I know I don’t have all the answers, and I’ll readily admit that I’m not always right, but today’s music industry is fundamentally flawed, and things will get worse long before they get better.
If you’re a musician, why do you hate the RIAA so much?
Simply that: because I’m a musician. And not the kind that takes off all my clothes and gyrates in public whilst my lips move in time to a pre-recorded chorus. I’ve spent years practicing and performing everything from Bach to (regrettably) pop, and the thought of all that time being measured in terms of cold hard cash makes me want to yack. I have no problem with artists making a living–I have a problem with Corporations using them as little more than a risky financial venture. Music should be enjoyed, not exploited.
Why do you keep this website anonymous?
Three reasons, really. One, because Heather B. Armstrong got dooced, and I happen to have a healthy appreciation for steady employment. Two, because I enjoy watching people misspell anonymous. And three, because I also happen to share a name with a relatively famous actress, and there’s only so much entertainment one can get out of forging replies to misdirected fanmail, you know what I mean?
